From late June to mid-September, Châtel village trades snow for wildflower meadows, mountain bikes and long days outdoors.
If you’re planning what to do in Châtel in summer, this guide walks you through the activities, the trails, and the family attractions.
What to do in Châtel in summer
Châtel is located at 1,200 m on the French side of the Swiss border, at the heart of the Portes du Soleil.
The summer season generally runs from late June to mid-September, with lifts and most attractions open.
To enjoy Châtel in summer, we suggest getting the Multi Pass.
| Multi Pass option | Price | Good to know |
| Per day (staying at a partner property) | From €4 per person per day | Minimum two-day stay; covers ~70 activities |
| Day pass (open to all) | €15 / CHF 18 per person | No accommodation needed |
| Under-5s | Free | Same as the winter ski pass |
| Hands-free card | About €3–3.50, non-refundable | Reusable summer and winter across all 12 resorts |
Important tip: the Multi Pass covers pedestrian lift access, not bike transport. If you’re riding, you’ll need a separate Portes du Soleil mountain bike pass.
Top summer activities and sports
The best Châtel summer activities cover a wide range, so that you can enjoy either an adrenaline-heavy week or a relaxing one:
- Pedestrian lifts: The Super-Châtel gondola from the village and the Pierre Longue chairlift at Pré-la-Joux carry you up to ridge-top walks without the climb.
- Fantasticable: A high-speed zip line that sends you flying across the valley.
- Summer luge (bobsled): A toboggan-style run that’s a reliable crowd-pleaser.
- Châtel Aventure: A tree-top adventure park with rope courses for different ages.
- Forme d’O: The village swimming pool, included on the Multi Pass.
- Tennis, mini-golf, the little tourist train and the cinema: Lower-key options for downtime or a wet afternoon.

Hiking and biking trails in Châtel
The village alone has around 90 km of marked mountain bike trails, and it plugs into roughly 600 km across the wider Portes du Soleil, all reachable by lift.
Meanwhile, trekkers have a bigger advantage as the regional network runs to several hundred kilometres of waymarked paths.
| Route | Type | Distance | Difficulty |
| Lac de Vonnes lakeside loop | Walk | Under 1 km | Easy, pushchair-friendly |
| Châtel–Abondance Dranse river path | Walk/cycle | Variable | Easy, flat, shuttle return |
| Pointe du Morclan circuit | Hike | Half-day | Moderate, big 360° views |
| Lac de Vonnes – Lac de la Mouille loop | Hike | ~10.4 km | Moderate (~550 m ascent) |
| Lake Morgins – Lac de Vonnes loop | Mountain bike | ~26 km | Hard, good fitness is needed |
For descending riders, the Bike Park at Pré-la-Joux is the main attraction. You can get there by the Pierre Longue and Rochassons chairlifts, and it has around 20 downhill trails graded from beginner to expert, plus a kids’ zone and a pump track.
On Fridays through July and August, the lifts stay open late for evening runs.
Family-friendly Châtel in summer attractions
If you’re travelling with children, there are plenty of family-friendly activities to enjoy with the little ones.
For example, you can walk the landscaped loop at Lac de Vonnes and watch the 40 m water jet fire up. Afterwards, cross the 180 m pedestrian bridge and let younger children loose on the lakeside playground.
For a bit more excitement, ride the summer luge or hop aboard the little tourist train. Meanwhile, older children can enjoy an adventure session at Châtel Aventure. On warmer days, cool off at Forme d’O in the afternoon.
Alternatively, take the easy, flat Dranse path towards the Abondance Valley and catch the shuttle back when you’re ready to return.

Relaxation and mountain scenery
Not every day needs to be active in Châtel in summer.
For a more relaxed pace, head to Lac de Vonnes, created in 1974 and now considered the village’s tranquil centre. Fed by mountain streams, ringed by an easy walking path, and framed by forests and peaks, it’s an ideal spot to unwind.
If you’d like to venture a little higher, the lake at Super-Châtel sits at 1,650 m. You can walk up in about 50 minutes or take the cable car in July and August. Once there, take in the panoramic views of the Dents du Midi across the border. For anglers, fishing is permitted on a catch-and-release basis using fly-fishing techniques only.
Châtel summer activities itinerary
First, start with a slow morning circuit of Lac de Vonnes. Next, settle in for a picnic by the water, ideally near the playground if you’ve got children with you.
After lunch, head up on the Super-Châtel gondola and spend the afternoon taking in the panorama of the Dents du Midi. Finally, ride back down to the village in time for an early dinner.
Other nearby activities worth a day trip
Part of the appeal of a Châtel summer is that you’re never confined to one valley. Because the village sits right on the Franco-Swiss border and inside the wider Portes du Soleil, a short drive or lift ride opens up a string of worthwhile half-days:
- Cross into Switzerland at Morgins: Just over the Pas de Morgins, the themed water-and-environment trail links Lac de Vonnes with Lac de Morgins, a dozen drop-shaped panels marking the friendly border crossing along the way. Remember to bring some Swiss francs or a card.
- Explore the Abondance Valley: A few minutes down the road, the historic village of Abondance is known for its 12th-century abbey and the cheese that shares its name. The flat Dranse path makes it an easy ride or walk from Châtel.
- Lac de Montriond: Around half an hour away, this striking green lake sits beneath sheer cliffs and has a supervised swimming area, canoeing and pony rides in summer, a good change of scene for families.
- Avoriaz and Les Gets: Both are reachable on the Portes du Soleil lift and trail network. Les Gets is a long-standing mountain biking hub, while car-free Avoriaz is home to the Aquariaz water park.
The same Multi Pass that covers Châtel works across all twelve resorts, so a single card can fill several days of Châtel summer activities without extra cost, minus bike transport, which still needs the separate Portes du Soleil mountain bike pass.
