Tucked away between Lake Geneva and the Swiss border, the Val d’Abondance is an area of the French Alps that is one of a kind. You’ll find traditional wooden chalets instead of high-rises, working dairy farms producing AOP cheese, a medieval abbey at the heart of the main village, and direct access to one of the largest ski areas on the planet.

The best outdoor activities in Val d'Abondance

In winter, the activities Val d’Abondance are centred on snow sports due to its access to the Portes du Soleil. In summer, hiking, cycling, and water sports are in full swing.

Summer activities

Hiking takes the lead in summer, with over 30 marked routes around Abondance. If walking isn’t your thing, you can swap boots for a bike and hit the Portes du Soleil bike park, which packs in hundreds of kilometres of trails for every level, from gentle valley loops to proper downhill runs. Road cyclists tend to head for the Col du Corbier or the Col de Joux Plane just over the hill, both classic Alpine climbs that show up regularly on Tour de France route lists.

For a bit more of a thrill, paragliders launch from sites near Châtel and ride the thermals high above the valley. If you’d rather keep your feet on the ground, Lac des Plagnes and the Dranse river are good spots for local fishing. Alternatively, if you’re looking for a unique expereince, The Fantasticable in Châtel is a 1,200 m zipline that slings you across the valley at over 100 km/h.

Winter activities

When the snow comes in, Alpine skiing is the main activity in the Alps.

We suggest getting a Portes du Soleil lift pass, which gives you access to 600 km of pistes and 200-plus lifts linking 12 villages across France and Switzerland, so you can essentially ski into a different country for lunch.

Alternatively, the valley floor has cross-country loops that wind through forests and along the Dranse. Snowshoeing is another popular winter sport, and the local tourist office maps out around 100 km of marked routes, ranging from gentle family-friendly trails to longer half-day outings.

For families, the resort villages keep things fun with tobogganing, husky sledding, and horse-drawn carriage rides, all of which work well even if you don’t ski. And if you want to squeeze more out of your day, La Chapelle d’Abondance opens its slopes for night skiing on selected dates.

Discovering local heritage and landscapes

This is where the valley really separates itself from the better-known resorts further south.

The Abondance Abbey (Abbaye Notre-Dame d’Abondance) was founded at the very start of the 12th century and is one of Haute-Savoie’s earliest listed monuments. The site is open to the public year-round and hosts temporary exhibitions in the summer.

The valley is also famous for Abondance cheese, which has been made here since the 12th century, when monks at the abbey first developed it. By 1381, it was being shipped to the papal conclave in Avignon, and in 1990 it earned AOC status (PDO since 1996). A single wheel weighs between 6 and 12 kg and requires 60–100 litres of raw milk from local Abondance, Tarine, or Montbéliarde cows. You can visit producers and watch the process at the Maison du Fromage in Abondance or directly at working farms in the surrounding alpages.

Other heritage highlights we suggest visiting include traditional wooden chalets with carved balconies in La Chapelle d’Abondance, often described as one of Haute-Savoie’s prettiest villages, and the Sunday morning market in Abondance.

Planning your trip: What you need to know

Before you book anything, there are a few practical things you need to know.

Getting to the valley is easiest via Geneva Airport, which is about 60 km away and takes around 1h15 by car. If you’d rather travel by train, Thonon-les-Bains is the nearest mainline station and is roughly 30 km from Abondance, with regular taxi and shuttle services from there.

If you are planning a summer visit, hiking works best between mid-June and late September, and July and August give you the most reliable weather for high-altitude trails. Skiers, on the other hand, will want to aim for mid-December through to mid-April, with February usually having the best snow conditions.

Finally, in regard to money, euros are used throughout the French side of the valley, but if you cross over towards Morgins or pop into Switzerland from Châtel, it’s handy to have a few Swiss francs on you; some border spots will accept both.
