Lac de Cleuson is a breathtaking alpine reservoir within the Valais region of Switzerland. It is located just above the mountain village of Siviez near Nendaz. The lake has a beautiful shade of turquoise and provides nature lovers with a peaceful and visually stunning outdoor experience. More than just a scenic area, the Lac de Cleuson is also an important part of the hydroelectric power system.
In this post, we’ll guide you through the lake’s surrounding area and share how to get there and the best hiking trails nearby. We’ll also review what activities to enjoy and when the best time to plan your visit is.
Location and how to get to Lac de Cleuson
Lac de Cleuson sits high above the village of Siviez, within the Nendaz region of Valais, Switzerland. Its elevation is approximately 2,186 metres, and the lake lies within the famous 4 Vallées ski area. The Pennine Alps surround the lake, and glacial meltwaters feed the basin.
Getting there by car
Driving to Lac de Cleuson is the most convenient option, especially if you are coming from nearby towns. From Sion, you must follow signs to Haute-Nendaz and then continue to Siviez, where you’ll find a large public parking area. The drive from Sion to Siviez takes about 40 minutes. The route from Siviez continues on a narrow, winding alpine road that ascends toward the Cleuson Dam. However, this final section is not always open to private vehicles and may require special access or be closed during certain weather conditions. Therefore, we highly recommend checking conditions before planning your trip. If you are coming in summer, another choice is to park in Siviez and walk or cycle the remaining stretch.
Public transport
If you prefer using public transport, you can reach Lac de Cleuson from Sion or other Swiss cities by train. Then, from the Sion railway station, take the PostBus line 362 to Haute-Nendaz (approx. 30 minutes). Then, transfer to line 364 that continues up to Siviez, with a total travel time of about an hour. Buses are usually more frequent in summer and during the ski season, but we suggest you check the current timetable on the SBB website for planning your trip.
On foot or by bike
From Siviez, reaching Lac de Cleuson is a true experience. This well-marked trail takes you up to the dam, taking about 1.5 hours on foot. This option will give you the best views of the valley along the way. The elevation gain is around 500 metres, making it a moderately challenging hike. For cyclists, the route is accessible with a mountain or e-bike and offers a steady incline along a gravel path.

Best hiking trails around the lake
Lake de Cleuson hiking has some of the most iconic routes in the Valais region. Many trails meet the needs of a variety of physical abilities. Here are our four picks for the best hiking areas:
1. Bisse du Chervé Trail
This trail follows the historic Bisse du Chervé and is one of the highest irrigation channels in Valais. Beginning near the top of Combatseline, accessible by lift from Siviez in summer, takes you over the Cleuson Dam and the surrounding mountain peaks. Along the way, you will need to cross suspended wooden walkways and natural cliffside paths, with the lake’s turquoise waters visible below. It is a total distance of 11.6 kilometres and takes around 4 hours to complete.
Tip: Wear sturdy shoes and avoid this trail in rainy weather, as some sections are narrow and exposed.
2. Lac de Cleuson to Grand Désert Loop
We recommend this trail for experienced hikers only. The loop from Lac de Cleuson to Lac du Grand Désert takes about 5 hours to complete and is just about 10 kilometres in distance. Starting at the lake, the path ascends, eventually reaching the glacial lake of Grand Désert at over 2,600 metres in elevation. The trails are very rocky, so make sure to wear the appropriate footwear and gear.
3. Loop of Lac de Cleuson and Refuge de Saint-Laurent
This intermediate hiking trail circles around part of Lac de Cleuson and continues on to the Refuge de Saint-Laurent. The route includes moderate ascents and descents, with views that alternate between cliffs, meadows, and the lake below. It is 7.8 kilometres long and takes around 4 hours to complete.
4. Siviez to Lac de Cleuson
If you prefer to begin from the village of Siviez, this direct trail is a popular choice for many people planning a day trip to the lake. The path gently winds upward through forests and across small streams, opening up to the Cleuson Dam and the lake behind it. It’s a great option for families or first-time hikers who want a manageable hike. The trail is 7.8 kilometres in distance and takes about 2 hours to complete.

Nearby outdoor activities and things to do
Lac de Cleuson isn’t just for hikers, as there’s plenty to enjoy around the lake. In summer, we suggest taking a guided Cleuson Lake tour to learn about its hydroelectric significance. Why not pack lunch and unwind at one of the many designated picnic spots with panoramic views? For something more active, try the mountain biking trails that loop through the area, with options for all levels.
The best time to visit Lac de Cleuson
Summer undoubtedly is the best time to hike and tour the dam, with pleasant temperatures between 8°C and 20°C. Although, in the autumn, the landscape changes to beautiful colours, and crowds become fewer, allowing for a more relaxed experience. From November to May, the snow may restrict many of the trails, so it isn’t the best time to plan your visit.
